How to measure opening on ceiling

Most popular sizes of attic ladders

There are certain corners of the house that are better hidden from the world. These are rooms filled with old boxes, filled with junk, treasures, memorabilia from the early years of our turbulent youth and glory. The house hides our true face, which we are reluctant to share with people from the outside.

Attics are usually not part of the house that we would like to show off to the world. They are narrow, they are supposed to occupy a small space. We also require the product to be very resistant to heavy loads (after all, we will be carrying a lot of things on this ladder). In addition, they must be easy to assemble and to unfold and fold. In a work: it has to be functional!

Consider HOW you will be using your attic for. What will you be carrying, what will be the load on the stairs. The larger is the attic opening, the easier it will be to use. But it may prove to be an unnecessary expense if you rarely use these stairs. Choosing the right attic ladder also depends on your budget.

How is the popular size of attic ladders?

Each modern attic ladder consists of a box, a hatch, and a folding ladder. The box, although we should probably call it a "frame", is made of solid, smoothly planed boards forming a square. Popular sizes of the box are: 27-55 inches width and 21,5-31 inches length. The height of the box is usually: 5, 6, 7, 8 or 12 inch.

NOTE - the given dimensions are EXTERNAL dimensions. So if you are measuring the size of the rough opening in the ceiling, subtract a few millimeters from the width and length, ideally in the range to 0,787. Then you will get the dimensions of the box.

How to measure opening on attic ladder?

In the attached picture, the box has a length (A) and a width (B). They are one of the most important parameters that will allow you to perfectly adjust the size of the attic ladder. The following symbols mean:

G - maximum load (Ibs),
C - Maximum ceiling height (in),
D - Landing space (in),
E - Opening distance/angle (in).

Other elements are attached to the box, e.g. LAP. The said hatch is made of MDF or drywall. Depending on whether we have chosen an insulated model or not, their thickness will be different. The insulated hatch is slightly over 0,5 inch thick, and the insulated one - from 1 to 2 inches.

We have a very wide range of sizes on the market, you will certainly find something for yourself! The opening for a full-size attic ladder should be at least 22.5 by 54 inches. But the most popular range are:

  • Popular widths include: 35.5 inch, 43 inch, 47 inch, 51 inch, 55 inch,
  • Popular box lengths are: 21.5 inch, 23.5 inch, 27.5 inch, 31.5 inch.

To make your choice easier, below you will find a list of available sizes of attic ladders available in our warehouse!

Room requirements

Attic ladders cannot be installed everywhere. Unfortunately, we do not always have an influence on how much space we have to unfold the ladder. Also, do not forget that attic stairs are much less used than traditional ones, which is why they are valued for their functionality. A perfectly selected ladder should be, above all, functional. Before buying, let's carefully consider whether the household members will not overload it, what we plan to arrange in the attic.

It is also required that the ceiling be densely ribbed or concrete, and in the case of wooden structures - that it fits in with the spacing of structural beams. This is of course for security reasons

Where can I buy a high quality attic ladder?

The most reasonable solution will be to buy a ladder to the attic in a store that is well stocked with spare parts and components (glue, foams and other elements), which will quickly respond to our possible doubts and questions. Be sure that you can meet qualified people - like us - who know their stuff - in our store! If you have properly measured the opening in the ceiling, I'm sure that you will have no problem in ordering a solidly packed, secured staircase in our online store and waiting for the shipment comfortably!
